One year after graduating high school and while attending community college part-time, Tim Lacey embarked on a remarkable journey into the lumber industry. Driven by the need for steady income—for car expenses and a bit of fun—he applied for what seemed to be an entry-level yard position at Ward Lumber Company in Jay, N.Y. Before his interview with owner Janet Ward, Tim’s mother encouraged him to follow up—“call her every other day.” Though initially skeptical, Tim heeded her advice, and about ten days later, Janet Ward invited him back for a second interview. Impressed by his perseverance, she offered him a sales position—rather than the yard job he had applied for—with a starting wage of just $6.00 per hour.

Lumber Person of the Year: Tim Lacey (Curtis Lumber Co.) with co-worker and friend, Bob Eakin, presenting.
So began his nearly 40-year journey marked by steady growth, resilience, and dedication. Over the next 21 years at Ward Lumber (1986–2007), Tim developed a wide-ranging foundation across the company.
He started in Counter Sales, transitioned to CDL Driver, operated a Boom Truck, took on the role of Yard Supervisor, served as Purchasing Agent, then Store Manager, and eventually moved into Outside Contractor Sales. This hands-on experience fostered a deep understanding of every facet of the business.
From 2007 to 2011, Tim channeled his expertise into entrepreneurship as a self-employed builder, executing projects that ranged from roofs and decks to comprehensive remodels and a new home construction—a testament to his resourcefulness and craftsmanship.
In 2012, Tim joined Curtis Lumber Company, where his career trajectory continued its upward momentum. Initially hired as Outside Contractor Sales (2012–2013), he was promoted to Branch Manager in Plattsburgh (2013–2016). His responsibilities grew as he advanced to Director of Sales / Operations for the North Division (2016–2024). Today, Tim serves as Vice President of Operations, bringing seasoned leadership and strategic vision to that role.
Throughout his professional journey, Tim has enriched his capabilities through continued education. He is a CBMS (certified building material specialist) Graduate and completed the LMC Leadership Excellence Masterclass, emphasizing not only his commitment to self-improvement but also to leading with excellence.
Beyond his professional achievements, Tim’s proudest contributions shine most brightly at home. He and his wife, Wendy, raised three children —Erin, Levi, and Taressa—now adults with families of their own alongside their spouses Mike, Courtney, and Jon. Their pride extends to their grandchildren—Graham, Colden, Tate, and Landen—who bring joy and family connections that enrich his life outside the boardroom and job site.
Outside of work and family commitments, Tim recharges through hobbies that reflect his love for competition and camaraderie. He enjoys golfing, cornhole, darts, and, most of all, cherishes time at camp with his family—and friends who have become like family—a place where memories are made and bonds are strengthened.
The Vermont Retail Lumber Association is proud to honor Tim as 2025 Lumber Person of the Year.
