Simpson Strong-Tie, a leader in engineered structural connectors and building solutions, is expanding its line of brick ties with model BTCT, which meets the new requirements under the National Building Code of Canada.

Standard brick ties currently on the market meet the prescriptive requirements of Part 9 of the National Building Code of Canada (NBC 2015). In 2024, the Provincial jurisdictions are adopting the new building code (NBC 2020), which requires brick ties to be laid on the brick or into the mortar and then fastened into the backup material. Previously, brick ties were attached to the wood backup material and then bent into place so they sit in the mortar, attaching the veneer to the wood structure and keeping the non-structural brick wall in place.

Under the new requirements, compliant brick ties must be:
– Pre-bent ¼” from the fastener hole
– Post hot-dipped galvanized with a minimum coating thickness of 2.6 mils
– 20-gauge thickness

In addition to meeting the requirements of Part 9 of the NBC, the new BTCT brick ties also align with CSA Standard A370, which permits their use in commercial applications.

“Brick ties provide an essential connection between the building’s structural framing and brick or stone façade. The new BTCT brick tie is a solution that allows Canadian builders and masonry contractors to meet the latest codes while avoiding inspection callouts and mitigating future liability,” said Tim Bell, Product Manager for Simpson Strong-Tie.
