For nearly four decades, Dan “Bird” Uhlman has exemplified the values that define the independent lumber industry: hard work, integrity, service, and a genuine commitment to people. His career began in 1987 when, shortly after meeting his future wife, Laurie, he joined her family’s business, Ashland Lumber. What started as a job became a lifelong career, and following Belletetes’ acquisition of Ashland Lumber in 2004, Bird continued building lasting relationships with customers, coworkers, and industry partners.

Throughout his 39 years in the industry, Bird has been an enthusiastic supporter of both the Northeastern Retail Lumber Association (NRLA) and the NHRLA. A familiar face at NRLA, Hoo-Hoo, and LMC events, he has always valued the friendships and connections the industry provides. His leadership includes serving as Chairman of the LMC New England Group in 1994–95 and again in 2013–14. He is also a Granite State Hoo-Hoo member and one of only two remaining active charter members.
A graduate of Ashland High School’s Class of 1983, Bird’s dedication to his hometown is as impressive as his professional accomplishments. He has served on the Ashland Fire Department since 1984 and has held leadership positions in the Ashland Fireman’s Association. His community service also includes the Ashland Budget Committee, Green Grove Cemetery Trustees, Ashland Town Library Trustees, Supervisor of the Checklist, the Precinct Boundary Committee, and years of coaching youth softball and basketball.
Bird’s commitment to his community has earned widespread admiration. He served as Grand Marshal of Ashland’s Halloween Parade in 2022 and the Fourth of July Parade in 2023. During the pandemic, when celebrations were canceled, he organized a one-man Fourth of July parade by driving his decorated lawn mower through town, bringing smiles to neighbors during a difficult time. For many years, he has also delighted local children by portraying Santa Claus at community events.
Born in Plymouth, N.H., Bird treasures his lifelong connection to Ashland. He and Laurie have been married for nearly 39 years and are proud parents of daughters Katie and Sarah, as well as grandparents to their first grandson, Daniel Jeffrey. Whether traveling with family or enjoying a round of golf—complete
with the occasional “Happy Gilmore” drive—Bird embraces life with enthusiasm.
Guided by the philosophy to “be the best you,” Bird has earned the respect and admiration of colleagues, friends, and neighbors alike. His lifelong dedication to the lumber industry, his community, and his family makes him a truly deserving recipient of the NHRLA’s Lumber Person of the Year Award.
