Maine-based Hancock Lumber has welcomed industry veteran Andy Carberry as general manager of its Salisbury, Mass., location. Carberry has spent 41 years in the LBM industry—in virtually every position—from load builder, operations, lumberyard design, and general manager. For the past 16 years, Andy was the general manager of Middleton Building Supply in Hampton, N.H.

Following Hancock Lumber’s June 2025 acquisition of Johnson Lumber and the former owner’s transition to retirement, the Salisbury GM role became available. The acquisition marked Hancock Lumber’s first lumberyard in Massachusetts and its 12th overall.

Regarding the new hire, chief operating officer Mark Hopkins said, “We are excited to welcome Andy Carberry to our team as general manager of our Salisbury location. Andy brings over four decades of industry experience, deep operational knowledge, and a proven track record of leadership. His passion for building strong teams and delivering exceptional customer experiences aligns perfectly with Hancock Lumber’s culture and values. As we continue to grow in Massachusetts, Andy’s leadership will be instrumental in building and strengthening relationships with our employees, customers, and community.”

Carberry said, “I first noticed Hancock Lumber when I read an article about their commitment to their people and the culture that they were building to support them. It was an interesting philosophy that seemed very parallel to my management style, so I took the next step and reached out. After several meetings I realized that Hancock would be a great fit and would provide me with an opportunity to further develop my career and my personal growth.”

Seven Generations

In other news from Hancock, the company recently shared that it added two seventh generation owners as official board members. Chairman and sixth generation owner, Kevin Hancock, welcomed daughters Abby (Hancock) Doherty and Sydney (Hancock) Hillman during a June meeting. The daughters join six other board members—their dad, Kevin, along with five additional outside directors.

“It’s hard to put into words what being connected to the Hancock Lumber team has meant and continues to mean to me. I’m so proud to support a company that leads with purpose, puts people first, and continues to evolve while staying true to its roots. As a seventh-generation member of the Hancock family, I have a deep commitment and appreciation for our company’s culture and legacy—I am honored to contribute to our future through board service,” said Abby Doherty.

Sydney Hillman added, “Growing up alongside Hancock Lumber has been the most incredible blessing in my life. I am so inspired by the employees and people who call Hancock Lumber home and who continue to grow our business to what it is today. To be joining the board of directors alongside some of the most inspiring, accomplished and humble professionals is an extreme honor and I am so excited to continue to support our family business, invest in our employees and positively contribute to our communities across the state.”
