On April 27, representatives from the Northeast Construction Trades Workforce Coalitionjoined students, parents, and staff from WSWHE BOCES at the New York State Capitol for a day of advocacy, education, and meaningful conversations with state legislators about careers in the skilled construction trades.
The visit provided students with the opportunity to share personal experiences and discuss the challenges many young people face when pursuing careers in the construction industry—particularly young women entering traditionally male-dominated fields. Through these conversations with legislators, students highlighted barriers related to awareness, access, and the stigma often attached to choosing a skilled trades pathway over a traditional four-year college route.
Students spoke candidly about their experiences exploring careers in welding, construction, apprenticeships, and workforce training programs. Their stories reinforced the importance of expanding career awareness and ensuring that students, parents, school counselors, and communities understand that the trades offer rewarding, respected, and financially sustainable career opportunities.

One of the young women participating in the Capitol visit is currently interning with Bonacio Construction, a member of the NCTWC, demonstrating the real-world opportunities available through partnerships between industry and education.
“The students were absolutely outstanding throughout the day,” said Doug Ford, President and Co-Founder of NCTWC. “Their willingness to share their stories and advocate for future generations made a lasting impression on everyone involved.”
The Northeast Construction Trades Workforce Coalition continues to collaborate with educators, contractors, unions, and community partners to promote workforce development initiatives and increase awareness of career opportunities within the construction trades industry.
The organizations also extend their appreciation to the legislators and staff members who took the time to meet with the students and hear firsthand about the importance of supporting career and technical education programs across New York State.
Special thanks to The Vandevoort Group for coordinating the meetings and helping make the day a success.
