Location: Tully, NY
Position: Chief Operations Officer • Tully Building Supply
How did you begin your career in the LBM Industry?
I was working for a large agriculture company and needed a change. I saw a job posting for a purchasing assistant/sales support role at Tully Building Supply and took the leap.
What are some of the responsibilities of your position?
I oversee all day-to-day operations of two retail lumberyards and a warehouse/distribution facility.
What are some of the biggest challenges you face in your career?
Tully Building Supply has been blessed with having many long-term employees. The downside is that many of them are reaching retirement at the same time. Over the last two years, I have had to replace over half the staff. The challenge has been to bring in new talent while maintaining our standards of excellence that comes with years of experience. Other than that, I can sum it up in one word: COVID.
What have you learned since working in the industry?
The biggest thing I have learned is that this industry is very heavily based on relationships. It doesn’t always matter what brand of product you sell or where your pricing falls. The relationship that you have with customers and vendors goes a long way.
What advice would you give to anyone new to the industry?
Ask questions! In general, I have never been part of an industry that is so full of people willing to help you advance your career. I have made many lifelong friends along the way, and for that I am very grateful.
What are your passions outside of the office?
Outside of the office I like to cook, golf, kayak, and spend time with my wife, Kristi, and our tripod pitbull, Tobi.
