Location: Chicopee, MA
Position: Market Development Manager • Benjamin Obdyke
How did you begin your career in the LBM Industry?
I’ve been a part of the building products industry for a number of years, but began working more closely with the LBM industry when I joined Benjamin Obdyke in 2021. I hadn’t been actively looking for a new role, but when I was approached by Benjamin Obdyke I was quickly drawn to the strong company culture, the clear passion everyone on the team has, and the importance of our products to the longevity of homes and buildings. I love having a job I’m excited to show up for and with a company that cares about me.
What are some of the responsibilities of your position?
In my current role as market development manager, I cover Connecticut, Rhode Island, upstate New York, and Western Massachusetts. I work directly with builders, architects, lumberyards, and distributors to ensure everyone across the channel has the knowledge and comfort level to sell, specify, and install our products. Through our conversations about building science and high-performance assemblies, which are especially critical in this region amid extreme weather conditions and shifting code requirements, we’re able to help solve complex challenges to create homes and buildings that last.
What are some of the biggest challenges you face in your career?
As any salesperson in the LBM industry knows, it sometimes takes time to break through with a new customer; it’s not always the right moment for them to hear your message. I’ve learned that it’s important to be persistent and to trust in the value of our products. We sell innovative solutions to real problems, and that message almost always gets through and new, long-lasting relationships begin.
What have you learned since working in the industry?
Building real connections is key. Once in this industry, most people tend to stay. Cultivating relationships is important not only to build and ensure long-term success, but it’s also what makes the job fun and rewarding—and it’s one of the things I love most about our industry.
What advice would you give to anyone new to the industry?
The people you meet are going to be part of your career for a long time—always carry yourself with honesty and integrity, and sell something you believe in. At the same time, have fun and don’t take yourself too seriously. Understand that you’ll fail at some things when you start, but continue to work hard and don’t give up. Enjoy making connections, building friendships, and building partnerships. It’s one of the most rewarding parts of this job.
What are your passions outside of the office?
I love to spend quality time with family and friends. I particularly enjoy staying in and trying new recipes
for my son and my friends. Most recently I made my own red sauce. Next up: Perfecting sourdough bread.
